ABOUT

Fried is a socipolitical, fashion, arts and culture magazine and was born from the phrase “bigger fish to fry” which developed into the magazine’s mission statement, “bigger fish to fry than looking pretty”.

I am the Founder, CEO, Co-Creative Director, Editor and Writer at Fried.

The idea for Fried came about as a result of my own personal interest in writing and magazines combined with my observation of the lack of the latter in Ireland. Growing up as a young girl, I was a loyal KISS Magazine subscriber and reader of National Geographic. My bedroom wall was a maze of collaged cuttings of horses, celebrities and random words, my notepads full of scrawled ideas and my brain bursting with curiosities about the outside world.

As a teenager this list of curiosities only grew longer, however the list of outlets from where I could source information grew shorter. I’ve always been a paper over screen kind of gal. It’s only been a few years since I finally gave into a Kindle (now one of my favourite possessions), so the fact of online content taking over from traditional print was a hard pill to swallow for me.

The issue of print versus online aside, the fact still remains that in Ireland there are not many publications for people between the ages of 16 to 30 and arguably higher as the real issue is there isn’t enough young contemporary content available as a whole.

Furthermore, there are multiple topics which concern people of this age, that are not being brought to their attention, such as the importance of voting.

Being within this age bracket myself, I have an awareness that topics such a politics or voting are usually yawn-triggers. That is why, Fried tackles all topics from the same point of view as those reading it. For example, when talking about voting, instead of reiterating the constitution and the history of democracy, more attention is given to targeting the reader directly ie. playing your vote to your advantage could help you get closer to better student accommodation and tighter rent regulations.

Fried Issue 001 contains a total of 17 stories including topics such as anorexia, sustainable fashion, voting, sex education, transgender healthcare and many more. The magazine also includes a number of fun extras such as a crossword on sex education, a recipe and a #totesawkymomo section in tribute to the embarrassing moments segment of 00’s teen magazines.

My role at Fried involved co-creating the vision for the magazine, managing all aspects of the business, editing the podcast and social media content and ensuring all writers and creators cooperated to get the work done. I was the Editor-in-chief and also a writer; interviewing those who were to be featured and creating stories on them.

Fried ISSUE001 launched on January 17 in Ormston House, Limerick followed by a Dublin launch at Tola Vintage on January 19. All copies sold out.

Following the launch of ISSUE001, Fried expanded into a podcast entitled ‘That’s Fried’ where listeners who may not have been lucky enough to grab a copy of ISSUE001 had the opportunity to hear a bit about it instead. Current issues were also discussed and guests welcomed on to give their perspectives.

Fried was launched and sold as a print magazine with all printing done in Ireland with an Irish retailer. For the purpose of this website, all Fried ISSUE001 content is available here for your viewing.

Although Fried is currently no longer in operation, there is always a possibility it may make a reappearance. It was a fantastic opportunity to create something wonderful, be part of a team and write about things that interest me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it!
