MEET KATIE

Name: Katie Mulvihill

Age: 19 years old

Title:

Course: Business (Hons) with Marketing at Griffith College Dublin

Why did you want to get involved in Fried? When Enya contacted me with the idea of creating this magazine I was chuffed. I’ve never been big into writing but this really opened my eyes to the idea of doing it more. This gave me an opportunity to be creative and to voice my opinion. I knew the minute she mentioned it to me I wanted to write an article about trans health care in Ireland because it is something that is not spoken about and needs to be. I knew by getting involved with the magazine, I would meet so many cool people, make new friends and cool experiences like the photoshoot which I loved, having watched America’s Next Top Model for years #youwannabeontop

What’s your guilty pleasure? Well, food-wise it would have to be Pringles, everyone always knows me for having a can of pringles in my water bottle pocket in my school bag. My love (if you know, you know) for Westlife has blossomed in 2019 and proudly was my fifth most listened to artists on Spotify in 2019, just have to admit they have some absolute tunes as much as everyone laughs at me for it lol. My absolute overall guilty pleasure would have to be eating pringles, listening to Westlife and playing solitaire, would happily choose that over a night out

Name one place you’d love to visit? I’m not really the type of person that goes on many holidays because I feel like it’s never enough time, I would rather get the experience of living somewhere and really understanding the culture. My parents used to live in Greece and got engaged there so I think that is somewhere I would love to live even if it’s just for the summer. They lived in Ios which was quite isolated so I feel there would be a sense of community within the locals. The blue and white colour scheme is so beautiful too and my parents even painted our garden furniture these colours for a taste of Greece in Ireland!

What are you reading at the moment? I find it quite difficult to sit down and really get into a book, but my friend showed me one about a year ago that I find really intriguing. ‘Sapiens, A Brief History of Humankind’ It talks about different theories of how we have developed as humans and about how our cultures, bodies and way of thinking has changed. I would consider myself more of a scientific believer than religious or anything so I think the book caters to my way of thinking. An interesting fact that was stated is how a tomb was found with two young children roughly aged 10, a boy and a girl. Both were surrounded by 5,000 ivory beads each, a single ivory bead takes 45 minutes to prepare. There are theories stating the children were children of leaders who died of a young age or else believed to be the incarnation of long-dead spirits. Of course, we will never know the truth of why these children were so honoured but it gives you the opportunity to be creative and open your mind about our history.

What do you hope to achieve from Fried? I hope to achieve better writing skills for sure. I also hope to come out of this with an even more open mind and learn more about the culture of Ireland. Doing a magazine is something I would never have even thought about if Enya didn’t ask me so after completing this amazing experience I hope to continue to do more fun and exciting projects that put me out of my comfort zone and boost my confidence.

Share one piece of advice you think everyone should live by? It’s definitely tough to try to give one piece of advice but I would have to say always put yourself first. I know it sounds selfish but I have always believed that you can love someone to the moon and back but still put yourself first. You only have one life and if you constantly live by others needs and wants then you’re not making it your own. To put your priorities first means you are looking after your own mental health which is so important in my eyes.
