TALKING TO THE DEAD WITH A SPIRITUAL MEDIUM
By Enya McIntyre
I’ve always wondered what it would be like to see or speak to dead people. For Dublin-based medium, Felicity, this is just life.
The job of a medium, as described by Felicity is to function as a “voicebox” for spirits and be able to hear, feel and sense spirit as well as receive messages they may have about the future.
“It’s like Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost and they’re all going hello - it’s actually like that. I’ve had to start saying I’m doing my shopping, feck off”, says Felicity.
As Felicity puts it, every person has a group of spirit “people” comprised of lost loved ones and others who take on the duty of accompanying that individual through life, providing protection and guidance from the other side.
If you’re wondering how the feck did Felicity know that, her answer is she didn’t, it was your people who told her.
“I can tell people what they’re worried about or what they’re thinking about because their spirits told me and then I tell people and they go yeah and then I ask the spirits so what’s going to happen with that and they tell me”, she says.
At four-years-old, Felicity’s life was changed forever when she was struck by a car, awakening her psychic abilities.
“I remember at the time feeling no pain, I was floating above my body and I felt two energies beside me. Then I woke up in the arms of the woman who had knocked me down”, recalls Felicity.
“From then on I could feel energies. And at 4 years of age you’re thinking can everyone else feel this? I use to think; is this a dream?”.
Growing up mixed race and adopted in mid 70’s Ireland brought its own trials and tribulations for Felicity without throwing the confusion of seeing dead people into the mix. And given the hush-hush culture of the era, it wasn’t something she discussed with others.
“My best friend said she remembers when we were about 6, we were colouring or something and I was looking up to the corner and she asked me what I was looking at and I said “I’m just looking at the people who are looking at us”.
“And she just thought okay weird but we didn’t talk about it”, says Felicity on the subject.
Around the same age, Felicity recalls having vivid dreams in which she would float up to the corner of the bedroom she shared with her sister and be looking down at their bodies asleep in bed. It was only years later when attending a tarot reading, she learned that this was a psychic experience.
With the assistance of tarot cards, Felicity opened her third eye and subsequently her connection to spirit and handle on her gift became stronger, allowing her to slip naturally into her current profession as a psychic medium for others.
“I didn’t say I’m gonna grow up and become a medium, it was more like I might say something to somebody and then someone else would hear about me and so on”.
As for the matter of “growing up” and “becoming” a medium, this is something Felicity suspects may be out of our control.
“I think everybody does have a sense of awareness but I kind of think you have to be born with this”.
Meeting her birth father provided Felicity with the greatest revelation of all: psychic abilities run in the family and are passed on through the eldest child and daughter in each family.
“It was like a jigsaw puzzle being put in place showing me I was born with this”.
It also planted the unshakeable premonition that her first born would be a girl to carry on this gift.
“I was convinced my first child would be a girl and would have a gift but then I had a boy and I was so confused but then my child ended up being trans so she is a girl”, says Felicity.
I have to say, as the details of Felicity’s gift were unfolding before me, I was in complete awe but as Felicity points out it’s not always sunshine and rainbows.
“Sometimes it’s very hard to switch off, you can get emotionally attached”, says Felicity as she recalls a recent encounter she had with a woman and the spirit of her young daughter who died as a result of a brain tumour.
When Felicity tragically lost her brother at a young age, she remembers this event as being the moment she first felt fear in relation to her gift.
“I remember going to bed that night and putting the covers over my head and praying I wouldn’t be able to see him because I knew I could. That was the first time I was very aware of the scary side of this ability”, she says.
The obvious lingering question is: is this work dangerous? Surely speaking with and seeing dead people runs it’s risks?
“People like me are like a lighthouse it’s like yahoo look at me I have a gift. When I’m working the portal is open so what I do is I ask my people and Archangel Michael to guide me and keep me safe while I’m doing my reading. It’s not to keep me safe from the people I’m reading or their people but it’s just that there’s a little gap where negative energy can come in”, says Felicity.
Another burning question people tend to pose to Felicity is “what’s it like” on the other side?
Simply answered, Felicity says, “I don’t know”.
“The only way I would describe it is it’s like you’ve just gone into another room. You know the way it’s really typical of people when somebody dies and there’s stars in the sky to say there’s grandad or whatever but what I’m trying to say to people is the spirit world is much closer than that”.
“It’s right around us, it’s a parallel universe around us, it’s like stepping into the other room”, says Felicity.
However, as Felicity points out, you don’t need to possess psychic abilities to receive spiritual guidance. She notes that tarot cards are a great way of recieving guidance as well as requesting signs.
“People always say to me “I’ve never recieved a sign” and I say well have you asked? And usually they’ll say no and I say well then what do you expect. How do you expect spirits to know you want a sign. They might think you need one but if you haven’t asked they won’t give it”.
“Whatever you put out will come back”.
