The impact of Tik Tok on users attention spans

The topic of this project is the effect of TikTok and other social media platforms on the attention span of users. The inspiration for this project started out as boredom during the first lockdown in Ireland, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Confined to the walls of my own home, I, like so many others, decided to join the app Tik Tok in the hopes it might kill some time and provide some entertainment to fill the long, uneventful days. I immediately began to notice differences in my attention span; I could no longer focus on videos longer than 30 seconds, reading for long periods of time became difficult and skipping to the next song after 30 seconds became a common occurrence. It seemed obvious to me these new changes in myself were linked to my usage of this app that relies so heavily on sucking in the attention of users with its reel-like second-long videos, causing hours to pass on the app without notice.

ABOUT FRIED

Fried is a socipolitical, fashion, arts and culture magazine which launched in January of 2020.

I am the Founder, CEO, Co-Creative Director, Editor and Writer at Fried.

Fried Issue 001 contains a total of 17 stories including topics such as anorexia, sustainable fashion, voting, sex education, transgender healthcare and many more. The magazine also includes a number of fun extras such as a crossword on sex education, a recipe and a #totesawkymomo section in tribute to the embarrassing moments segment of 00’s teen magazines.
